There is a growing trend in the food and packaging industries: whereby agricultural by-products are transformed into valuable materials. This approach aligns closely with recent research on waste valorisation, which seeks to convert industrial by-products into useful resources.
Südzucker has now launched BeetKraft® a product which mirrors the innovative approaches highlighted in recent food packaging research, particularly the movement towards more sustainable and resource-efficient solutions. Like the natural antioxidant studies discussed in Baking Europe, Spring 23 edition, this product represents a practical application of circular economy principles.

By utilizing co-products from sugar production, it can replace up to 40 per cent of conventional wood-based pulp in paper production. The fibre is processed locally in southern Germany, reducing transportation distances and maximising the utility of agricultural resources.
Suitable for kraft paper, folding boxes, cardboard, and containerboard, this new sustainable packaging has undergone rigorous testing for food safety. It provides a practical solution to the ongoing challenge of reducing industrial waste while maintaining high-quality packaging standards.
Research conducted with PTS – Institute for Fibres & Paper validates the material's properties, demonstrating the potential for innovative approaches to packaging production. Südzucker aim is to begin industrial-scale production at its Offstein factory, marking a significant step in sustainable packaging technology.
As global industries increasingly prioritise resource efficiency and waste reduction, solutions like BeetKraft highlight the potential for creative, environmentally conscious product development.
