A recent episode of the Dutch television programme Doe Maar Duurzaam ('Just Be Sustainable') took its cameras to Klöckner Pentaplast's innovation hub and manufacturing site in Featherstone, UK, examining how industrial packaging organisations are responding to environmental and resource pressures.
The programme, broadcast on SBS6 and available via streaming in the Netherlands, does not profile companies or their products. Its editorial focus is broader: sustainability challenges in industry, covering design approaches, material use and manufacturing processes. The episode featuring kp aired in early July 2026.
Filmed across the Featherstone site, the episode follows packaging development from early concept work through to scalable production, with particular attention to how formats are designed, tested and brought to manufacturing scale. It also considers end-of-life pathways, placing material choices within a full lifecycle frame rather than stopping at the point of manufacture.
Central to the episode is the question of trade-offs. Food packaging must perform, protecting product integrity and reducing food waste, while also responding to shifting regulatory requirements and resource constraints. As Ben Elkington, VP Marketing & Innovation, Food Packaging at kp, puts it:
"There is no single solution that addresses every challenge."
That acknowledgement of complexity is, arguably, the episode's most useful contribution. Sustainability in food packaging involves variables that interact in ways that resist simple optimisation: a material choice that improves recyclability may affect barrier performance; a lighter format may create processing complications. The programme's decision to show development work in progress, rather than presenting finished outcomes, reflects that reality.
Doe Maar Duurzaam is available to view online and via kp's website.
