Spanish biscuit manufacturer Family Biscuits has acquired the assets of Natural Biscuits, a Burgos-based company that entered bankruptcy proceedings in 2020. The deal forms part of the Jaén company's €1 million investment plan for 2025-2026.

Financial Performance and Growth Trajectory

Family Biscuits recorded €32 million in revenue for 2024, a 14% increase from the previous year following 50% growth in 2023. The company targets €50 million in revenue for 2025.

Founded in 2021, the company operates from facilities previously owned by Cerealto Siro Foods. The site was facing closure due to losses but now employs approximately 200 staff.

Product Strategy and Innovation

The company focuses on its own brand rather than private-label manufacturing. María Santana, Director of Communication and Marketing, explains:

"We don't do private label unless the client also buys our brand; we work with a mixed model."

Family Biscuits emphasises healthy formulations using high-quality ingredients, particularly extra virgin olive oil from the Jaén region. The company's R&D department has collaborated with olive oil technology centres and the University of Jaén to develop oil that maintains properties during baking without causing rancidity or flavour changes.

Key products include:

María del Sur range: María del Sur Canela and María del Sur Integral with Spelt, both containing 100% extra virgin olive oil. The integral variant incorporates whole grain flour.

Specialised lines: María Ginger with cinnamon and Tostakids (targeting children with Paw Patrol sponsorship), enriched with cocoa, calcium, iron and six vitamins.

Health-focused options: Growing range of 0% added sugar products including Digestive Natur Fun Oat 0% and Petit 0%. The company also produces gluten-free varieties and oat-based products.

Bulk formats: Responding to changing consumer purchasing patterns.

Operational Challenges and Resilience

The company has navigated operational challenges including a six-month furlough scheme (ERTE), the COVID-19 pandemic, rising raw material costs and transport strikes.

Market Position and Future Plans

The Natural Biscuits acquisition will increase production capacity and support the company's goal of developing ten new product lines annually. Family Biscuits aims to strengthen its position in the Spanish market while exploring expansion opportunities.
